DeSoto heads

The 54-55 Chrysler heads are regarded as the best early Chrysler hemi heads because they have the best port angle. Is this also true for the DeSoto? Did DeSoto lower the port angle when they went to the raised block in 56?

Since the raised block heads are prone to cracking, the question comes up - can the low block heads be ported to equal the raised block heads? I realize I am digging up an old thread.

On the Chr the 392 is literally a bigger engine than the Desoto. To get it to fit under the hood they had to squish the heads & intake, or @ least the intake, a bit. The smaller Desoto didn't have that problem.

The DeSoto 330 through 345 heads have bigger ports, valves, and combustion chambers than the 276 and 291 heads. There are no other significant differences. Any DeSoto head can be used on any DeSoto block. Unlike the Chrysler, the intake manifold must match the block used (276/291 low deck, or 330/345 tall deck). The tall deck heads would be preferred in any high performance application except that it's hard to find tall deck heads that aren't cracked. Don't buy tall deck heads unless they have been proven crack free. 291 heads would be a second choice. They have larger valves than the 276 heads, but the ports are the same. The 276 and 291 heads do not have the cracking problem of the tall deck heads.

Not same for Desoto. Desoto changed the intake manifold and put bigger valves in the 56 heads. Exhaust ports are oval.
