5 desoto hemis

Hi all , new here , have a chance to buy 5 desoto hemi engines , they have been sitting under a tarp for years . One is an s16 4 barrel ?? . I havnt been up to see them but they look to be in fair shape with some heads , pan and manifolds removed . Some look intact . Should I buy or pass . If the 4 barrel intake is there is it worth anything . I originally purchased a 291 for my 1959 rambler rat project . Have that apart and one cylinder looks to need s sleeve from critter corrosion . Thanks , Richard

well I picked up the other 4 hemi's today . One complete and the others missing parts and disassembled in various stages . One s16 has domed pistons , it's the only one with them . Is this standard for the s16 thanks again everyone , Richard

OEM are flat top. OEM C/R was only 7.1 advertised & could be up to a point lower. Domed aftermarket pistons would be a real plus if reusable. If not replacement tends to be expensive.

Yeah, if it had domed pistons it also probably had a hot cam & a 4 bl of some sort. If you're going to "lube it" change the oil (if any) before running the O/P with a drill.

> it's open right now and no pan , just rods crank and pistons in the block . My only concern is that dust or dirt probably got in there and blowing it out and lubing it up could score something when I try to rotate it but in the same turn I would feel more comfortable getting the pistons out it I got it to rotate first . Sent the guy a text with an offer for more money if he had the cam and intakes . We'll see !! Thanks again George for the response . This is a very quiet forum . Is there a site that all the hemi people are more active .

there is a Hemi Tech Index & other Hemi Threads on the HAMB. Mostly Chrysler, Desoto stuff is less represented. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/hemi-tech-index.118764/

Thanks again , I'm going back this weekend to get the rest . The s21 was rough and not sure if it's salvageable . They have all been under a tarp for years . I'm still thinking my original block that might need a sleeve is what I'll build . Anyway I'm looking to possibly turn the cam , higher compression pistons and intake and headers . Mild build 300+ hp . Nothing fancy just I've had cars sitting for years and if I don't do something simple it will never get done . Just want to be a little different .

If it going into a hot rod you'll probably have the only Desoto hemi at most Rod Runs!

Thanks again , drove the 3 hours there and the intake was just sitting on it , was a 2bl . Bought the s21 for $150 and left the rest , didn't think the truck would make the trip with all that weight . Basically said I could have them all for the $150 but the truck was running hot so didn't want to risk it . Hopefully this block is good enough to clean up and run .

Thanks George , s21 was the one I meant , were they all 4bl , he wants $500 for the 5 of them . I'm on the edge , I don't need them but would hate to see them scrapped . One in the phone has slight domed pistons . It's a 3 hour ride and not sure if it's worth it , I would be looking to reseller part

S16 is a 2 bl. If there is an OEM 4 bl it's worth some money, fairly rare. Before the recession they brought in above 500, was below 300 a few years ago.
