Rear Main Seal 392


Can not stop rear main seal leak. Used neoprene, leak continued. Tried rope, leaked worse. Any suggestions, other than replacing 392 Hemi with 350 SBC? twisted

If you have the high volume oil pump that will be your problem. Way to much pressure for a street car.

Gotta make sure the little channel "pumps" don't have a burr or Pitt on the seal area of the journal.

Red permatex at parting line. Do not over trim. Make it compress. Use lots of oil on the seal. Either type should work. Do you have "Chinese fingers" for the rope type? This is tough to do in chassis but I've done it. Recommend the neoprene.
Check plug at end of cam galley also. Make sure the source is the main seal...

I usually use a little sealer where the 2 halves meet. Plus a little oil on the seal surface to prevent burn when 1st fired up.

I just replaced rope with new neoprene seal I got from Hot Heads. Still leaks.
I just install the seal with the shim, trim everything up, tighten torque cap back to 85 pounds.

I have not tried silicone anywhere. If this is the thing to do, exactly where, and which type of silicone? I would appreciate any little trick you may have in your notebook to stop this dag gum aggravating leak.

I'm going to put up with the leak until driving season over, probably Jan/Fed 2017.
