315 Hemi Pistons

Weird thing happened. A guy got a 315 hemi that was from a running car years ago. He has finally got around to that project. He disassembled the engine and realized the pistons had offset valve notches, which means they were for a poly engine. How is it possible for a hemi to run these without the valves hitting the pistons? He said the engine was a car, not a truck.
